Monkey Bites and Herpes B –Virus Infection in Humans

Herpes B-virus,cercopithecine herpesvirus 1;herpesvirus simian endemic in Asian macaques is related to herpes simplex(HSV) type 1 in humans; infection with herpes B-virus in humans can result in fatal encephalitis and neurologic impairment. Human infections have been by bites, scratches, and percutaneous inoculation. HerpesB-virus infection causes minimal morbidity in macaques. Inhumans herpes B virus infection presents as rapidly ascending encephalitis with death rate of approximately70%.Neurologic sequelae are common in survivors. Intravenous antiviral therapy decreases the death rate, promptdiagnosis and treatment is essential to limit CNS damage. New guidelines for prevention and therapy for exposure to herpes B-virus are useful.
